http://sourceforge.net/projects/printer-on/ a small program which gives you a warning if you printer is powered on. You can put it in your linux shutdown script, so you'll be notified if your printer is still powered on when you shutdown your computer.

• I found the source code for PIC to Thermal printer interface but no part numbers or schematic is privided. Do you know where I can get any more info?

There is also a little printer called the 9022 without the intelliprint abilities for $295 that would fit nicely under the front desks.
