LaserJet 2100/2200 tray select operation

The LaserJet 2100 and 2200 are some of the very few printers that do not try to automatically select the correct tray based on paper size when printing with different sized paper loaded in the main tray, fold down tray, or optional secondary tray. Print jobs must specify exactly what tray to pull from in order to have the paper feed correctly.

In a DOS or other environment where the "setup string" of PCL commands for the printer can be specified, the following codes should be included in that setup.

  • Tray 2: <esc>&l1H
  • Manual Feed: <esc>&l2H Note: This option will require that the "Go" button be pressed for each page printed.
  • Tray 1: <esc>&l3H Note: Tray one is the same as the Manual Feed tray but will NOT require that the "Go" button be pressed for each page printed.
  • Tray 3: <esc>&l5H

Despite the fact that the Users Manual for the printer does list an "auto select" command (<esc>&l7H) it does not appear to work based on any matching of the print job page size and the paper size loaded in a tray.

In an environment where PCL commands can not be specified, the operating system or printer driver must be setup to send the command for your application. Windows NT printer driver setup via the "NT Forms" tab is known to work.

If you are using a legal size stock, we recommend that you install it in the pull out tray. Extend the tray by squeezing the blue button in the back of the tray and pulling it back to legal size. Use the fold down tray for letter size paper.
