Configuring IBM IP 1422 Trays for large, legal sized, Registration Keypacket stock

Please do NOT do this if you want to print your registrations on plain white paper, or on the Small Registration Key Packet, or if you want to manually load the Registration Keypacket stock, on demand, from the front (pull down) tray.

This is only for the large, legal sized, Registration Keypacket users who will load BOTH plain paper and keypacket stock into the printer at the same time and want the system to automatically select the correct stock for the item being printed:

If you do setup the 1422 for the keypacket and later decide not to load keypackets into the lower tray, or if you are a Homewood Suites transitioning to the new small registration keypacket, you will need to reset the printer to factory defaults (see below).

Configure the Printer

  • On the printers front panel, press the Menu button until you see "PAPER MENU" then press Select.
  • Press Menu untill you see "PAPER SIZE" on the second line and then press Select.
  • You should see "Tray 1 Size" and pressing Select will display the size that the printer currently thinks is in that tray.
  • Use the Menu buttons to change it to "=Legal" and press Select to save that setting.
  • Now change to Manual Pap Size with the Menu keys and press Select.
  • Change that to "=Letter" and press Select to save it.
  • Press Return to go back to the PAPER MENU and
  • press the Menu keys to change the second line to "Configure MP" and press Select.
  • Change the setting to "=Cassette" and press Select to save that setting.
  • Press Return to go back to the PAPER MENU and
  • Press Menu untill you see "PAPER SIZE" on the second line and then press Select.
  • Now change to MP Feeder Size with the Menu keys and press Select.
  • Change that to "=Letter" and press Select to save it.
  • Now press Go and the printer is setup correctly.

Load the keypacket stock:

  • Remove the lower tray from the printer.
  • Empty any paper out of the tray
  • On the underside of the tray, adjust the Media dial to "2" by pushing down on it while turning it.
  • Squeeze the "wavey" tab at the back of the tray and pull the tray stop ("Length guide") out as far as it will go. Make sure you can see "Legal" through the hole in the slide.
  • Load the keypacket stock face down with the registration slip towards the front of the tray.

A very common cause of jamming is a rear stop that is set too tight against the stock. Press the stock all the way down in the tray so that the spring locks down, then adjust the rear stop to just touch the paper.

Note that the tray may now extend 2 inches beyond the rear of the printer. Check for anything that may jam against the rear stop.

  • Pull down the "Manual Feed" tray at the front of the printer below the toner door and above the lower tray. Extend the paper support and load it with plain letter paper.
Note: The supports on this tray are delicate and easy to break. Please try to push the printer back as far as possible so that people will not walk into the tray as they move around behind the desk. IBM is now providing a metal tray support. This support reinforces the tray to help prevent damage if the tray is hit from above. This support does NOT re-inforce the tray against being hit from the side. If you have not recieved this metal support and are interested, please contact IBM via your help desk.

If the printer refuses to feed letter sized paper from the front tray, and displays a message asking you to load letter sized paper in tray 1, make sure the printer driver is set up without tray select direction. Under Start / Settings / Printers and faxes, right click on the printer driver and select Properties then click on the NT Forms tab and press the Clear all button then click Ok. Again right click and this time select Printing Preferences then ensure that Quick Sets is on Factory Default.

Configuring IBM IP 1422 Trays for plain paper registrations or the Small Registration Keypacket

The printer should arrive configured for plain paper printing. If you do NOT use the Registration Key Packet, and DO print registrations on plain paper, or if you are a Homewood Suites transitioning to the new, small, letter sized Registration Key Packet stock and the printer is not pulling from the correct tray, press the Menu buttons until you see "Utilities Menu" then press Select and again press the Menu buttons until you see "Factory Defaults" then press Select again. Then confirm that by pressing Select once again.
